Οn the 4rth of April and quite some time after Lawrence’s last visit to Thessaloniki, the team of Be Uncensored had the pleasure to have him again in the city, in collaboration with Club Division. Lawrence is an artist who inspires respect.  Not because of the character of his unparalleled productions per se, but because of his; because of the attitude he has kept throughout his ceaseless career in the electronic music scene. If there was an elevator pitch for the cast of producers to which he belongs, that would be “No chasing after trends, no compromise”.  He preserves and values the quality of music above all, and you can really spot that consistent quality in his productions, as well as in Dial and Smallville, for which Lawrence plays the role of the mastermind.

UrbanStyleMag had a great talk with him on the occasion of his gig in Thessaloniki,  and asked him about the special features of the nice ‘n mighty Smallville,  about  upcoming releases  and plenty more. And here’s what he said...

It ‘s not a striking observation that your music is diverse. So, aside from your job as a DJ and producer, what do you listen to when you relax at home?
One of my favorite items at home is my kitchen turntable. It's an old one that doesn't do any bass music- the needle would skip immediately. What makes me entirely happy is cooking while listening to some old Folkways Records, a very few jazz albums, such as Lloyd Miller or The Lyman Woodard Organization and other favorites. For example Will Oldham's "Ode Music" or Bela Bartok's "Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta".

Having a tour schedule like yours, is it easy to keep being motivated in each and every gig?
Of course touring around includes ups and downs, the inspiring  and disappointing next to each other, but I still feel motivated every time I start to pack my record bag.

You have been in the recording side of things for almost fifteen years now and you’ve managed to develop a very distinctive and personal sound. After all those years and output, do you still draw influence from other producers?
The music I produce is always a reflection of what I listen to or what I experience. Without others’ music I would lose my motivation. The Lawrence sound comes somehow through the technical approach when dealing with all these inspirations.

In a past interview you said you’re a “computer musician/producer”. Computers and especially the internet, have been accused of destroying the music market and the experience of music as an Art form. How would  you respond to these accusations?
The Music Market destroyed the Music Market. But with Dial Records, Smallville, Mule Musiq, we are part of an underground scene, which doesn't follow the strategies of "Music Market". When record shops disappeared we opened one, when downloads destroyed vinyl business we focussed on vinyl, when everything is down we start the party.

How does Smallville differ, compared to the other record shops you’ve been to?
Smallville never started as a serious business. It's an institution, a meeting point, a party, a crib for lovely dogs- and it serves the most wonderful records. But I guess that's what all great record shops are about.

Dial Records is one of the most consistent labels in terms of quality. Is it challenging, trying to keep an imprint financially healthy and inspirational at the same time?
We are not really into finances, it's just numbers. We ‘ve had releases that caused what other people would call a financial crisis- these are my favorite records!

Could you tell us three or four  records/albums that have never left your bag or your player at home during the last year or so?
Floorplan, Delsin100, Population One for the club, Queens "End Times" at home.

And lastly... what are the future releases we should watch out for? Any forthcoming release from Lawrence/Sten, or something exciting on Dial or any other label?
I am recently working on an ambient album for my friend Toshiya Kawasaki who celebrates the ten years anniversary of his Mule Musiq imprint. My absolute favorite Efdemin "Decay" is just out and we will release a couple of remixes soon. Roman Flügel (Dial) and Julius Steinhoff (Smallville) are about to release their wonderful albums this year as well. Wow, that's a lot to be looking forward to isn’t it.

Lawrence

Σου αρέσει να γράφεις μουσική που δεν περιορίζεται μόνο σε ένα είδος, αυτό δεν είναι νέο. Πέρα από τη δουλειά σου σαν DJ και παραγωγός, στο σπίτι τι ακούς;
Για παράδειγμα το “Ode Music” του Will Oldham και το “Music for strings, percussion and Celesta” του Bela Bartok.

Σ’ ένα tour με βαρύ πρόγραμμα σαν το δικό σου, πόσο εύκολο είναι να έχεις κίνητρο στην κάθε εμφάνισή σου;

Γράφεις εδώ και σχεδόν δεκαπέντε χρόνια κι έχεις καταφέρει να δημιουργήσεις το δικό σου ξεχωριστό μουσικό στύλ. Μετά από όλον αυτόν τον καιρό και τις τόσες δισκογραφικές σου δουλειές, επηρεάζεσαι ακόμη από άλλους παραγωγούς;

Σε μια παλιά σου συνέντευξη θυμάμαι είχες αυτοχαρακτηριστεί ως «computer musician». Από την άλλη οι υπολογιστές και κυρίως το ίντερνετ έχουν κατηγορηθεί ως αιτίες για την  καταστροφή της μουσικής αγοράς και για το ότι «η μουσική δεν βιώνεται πια σαν Τέχνη».  Τι έχεις να πεις γι’αυτό;

Πώς διαφέρει το Smallville από τα άλλα δισκάδικα;

Η Dial Records είναι μια από τις πιο σταθερές δισκογραφικές εταιρείες όσον αφορά στην ποιότητα. Ποιες προκλήσεις συναντάει κανείς όταν προσπαθεί να κρατήσει ένα label οικονομικά βιώσιμο, αλλά και να εμπνέει ταυτόχρονα;

Το τελευταίο album Floorplan, Delsin 100, Population One για το club, Queens - End Times για το σπίτι.

Και τέλος... τι να περιμένουμε στο άμεσο μέλλον; Κάποια κυκλοφορία από Lawrence / Sten, κάτι γενικότερα στη Dial ή σε κάποιο άλλο label;
